Unit 9 Saving the earth

(Senior English for China    Student’s Book 2A)

Teaching Aims:

1.     Improve the students’ reading ability.

2.     Learning something about the Earth Summit to help the students know the importance of protecting our earth.

3.     Learn some useful words and expressions.

Teaching Aids:      

1.     a tape recorder

2.     a projector

3.     the blackboard

Teaching Procedures:     

Step I. Greeting and lead-in

Greet the whole class as usual.

T: Last class we talked about our environment.We know that our environment is being seriously polluted. What can we do to protect the environment?

S1: More stores recycle batteries.

Plant trees every year.

Ride bikes to work.

Students study environmental issues in school.

S2: Use  the handkerchief instead of the paper napkin.(纸巾)

Use paper bags instead of plastic bags.

 Go to work on foot or by bike not by car.

S3:  Throw cans, bottles, paper and plastic into the dustbin.

Don’t use one-off chopsticks , lunch-boxes or disposable cups.

Don’t send  post-cards, but send electronic cards by e-mail.

Don’t throw rubbish everywhere.

S4:  Don’t make a lot of noise.

 Don’t  waste water.

Don’t waste electricity.

 Don’t destroy trees or grass.

T: What do you think the government can do to solve the problems?

( This part is designed for all the students to express their own ideas about how to protect the environment, practicing students’ spoken English.)

StepII. Reading --- Earth Summit

T: Summit means : the highest point, the top of a mountain

  Earth Summit means: meeting between the heads of             two or more countries

T: Now let’s get to know more about the Earth Summit.

Listening

T: Listen to the tape and try to find out the answers to the following questions.

The Earth Summit is an international big meeting

    dealing with serious problems on the earth. The first

    Earth Summit in 1972 is to share ideas about ways

T:Imagine that you’re taking part in a United nations youth programme aimed at improving and protecting the environment. Your group has been asked to decide which problem is the most important and suggest ways of dealing with it.

( Give students several minutes to prepare for the speech and then ask some to give a speech to the whole class.)
